The tradition of pious Islamic foundations goes back several centuries, they can be regarded as civil society organisations avant la lettre. After colonial politics and post-colonial modernisation efforts led to their demise in large parts of the Islamic world, they again gain in recognition in Muslim societies. But concrete legislation is necessary to support this trend.
