Flood Modeling by GIS Tools

BEDEN, Neslihan | DEMİR, Vahdettin | ÜLKE, Aslı

In this study flood risks of Samsun Degirmen stream determinate by MIKE 11 and GIS. In this study, MIKE powered by DHI software used for numerical 1D modeling of study area. The hydrological and hydraulic data for the study area were obtained from the Turkish General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works. ArcGIS program was used for creating a triangulated irregular network data (TIN). The flood inundation maps demonstrated that some areas, from the upstream to downstream of the Degirmen stream basin is affected from 100 year and 500 year return period events.

Developing numerical equality to regional intensity–duration–frequency curves using evolutionary algorithms and multi‑gene genetic programming

ÇITAKOĞLU, Hatice | DEMİR, Vahdettin

This study aims to carry out regional intensity−duration−frequency (IDF) equality using the relationship with IDF obtained from point frequency analysis. Eleven empirical equations used in the literature for seven climate regions of Turkey were calibrated using particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA) optimization techniques and the obtained results were compared. In addition, in this study, new regional IDF equations were obtained for each region utilizing MultiGene Genetic Programming (MGGP) method. Finally, Kruskal–Wallis (KW) test was applied to the IDF values obtained ...Daha fazlası

Analysis of Annual, Seasonal, and Monhtly Trends of Climatic Data: A Case Study of Samsun

ÜLKE KESKİN, Aslı | BEDEN, Neslihan | DEMİR, Vahdettin

Climate change impacts are perceived today as being very noticeable; determination of precipitation, wind, flow, evaporation and temperature trends has become essential for water resources and engineering projects in management and planning. Nowadays there is a lot of studies have been made in progress on global and regional climate changes in literature. In this study, monthly, annual and seasonal trends in average temperature, total precipitation, and average wind speed data calculated by Mann-Kendall, linear trend and Sen’s trend tests. The gauge station is located in Samsun, which is the l ...Daha fazlası

Sea Water Level Estimation Using Six Different Artificial Neural Networks Training Algorithm

ÇUBUKÇU, Esra Aslı | SANCIOĞLU, Sadrettin | DEMİR, Vahdettin | SEVİMLİ, Mehmet Faik

Water level estimation is important at various time intervals using the records of past time series in water resources engineering and management. For instance, sea level affects groundwater tables in low-lying coastal areas, Also hydrological regimes of some coastal rivers. Therefore, a reliable forecast of sea-level variations is required in coastal engineering and hydrologic studies. In this study, it has been tried to predict the changes in sea level by six different artificial neural networks (ANN’s) training algorithms (Quasi-Newton, Conjugate Gradient, Levenberg-Marquardt, One Step Seca ...Daha fazlası

Use Of Artificial Neural Networks In Stability Control Of Cantilever Retaining Walls

URAY, Esra | DEMİR, Vahdettin | KESKİN, AslıÜlkü | TAN, Özcan

Stability conditions effective on the design of the wall are safety factors of sliding, overturning and slope stability. Design of a cantilever retaining wall depends on great numbers of parameters such as soil properties and wall dimensions. In addition, design of the cantilever retaining wall must be satisfies stability conditions like safety factors of sliding, overturning and slope stability. It takes time to design wall considered all effective parameters with traditional methods. For this reason, some methods like artificial neural networks have been preferred due to reach the result in ...Daha fazlası

Impacts of climatic variables on water-level variations in two shallow Eastern Mediterranean lakes

YAĞBASAN, Özlem | YAZICIGİL, Hasan | DEMİR, Vahdettin

Variations in temperature and precipitation have direct impacts on the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the shallow lakes. This paper examines the possible linkages between climate variables and the water levels of shallow interconnected Lakes Mogan and Eymir, located 20 km south of Ankara in Central Anatolia. The variations in the lakes' water levels during 1996-2015 are studied and the impacts of climate variables on the lake levels are assessed to address the long-term consequences. The nonparametric Mann-Kendall test was used to quantify trends in the climate variables ...Daha fazlası

Neurocomputing intelligence models for lakes water level forecasting: a comprehensive review

DEMİR, Vahdettin | YASEEN, Zaher Mundher

Hydrological processes forecasting is an essential step for better water management and sustainability. Among several hydrological processes, lake water level (LWL) forecasting is one of the significant processes within a particular catchment. The complexity of the LWL fluctuation is owing to the diversity of the influential parameters including climate, hydrology and some other morphology. In this study, several versions of neurocomputing intelligence models are developed for LWL fluctuation forecasting at five great lakes Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario, ...Daha fazlası

Hydrological Time Series Forecasting Using Three Different Heuristic Regression Techniques

KİŞİ, Özgür | SHIRI, Jalal | DEMİR, Vahdettin

The ability of three different heuristic regression methods, least-square support vector regression (LSSVR), multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS), and M5 model tree (M5Tree), was investigated in forecasting hydrological time series. In the study, daily streamflow data from two stations in Turkey were used by employing cross validation method. Models were compared with each other with respect to root-mean-square error, mean absolute error and determination coefficient. The LSSVR was found to be superior to the MARS and M5Tree models in daily streamflow forecasting. The effect of perio ...Daha fazlası

Obtaining the Manning roughness with terrestrialremote sensing technique and flood modeling using FLO-2D: A case study Samsun from Turkey

DEMİR, Vahdettin | ÜLKE KESKİN, Aslı

Flooding is one of the most catastrophic events among the wide spectrum of natural disasters that impact human communities. The identification of floodprone areas and the probability of occurrence, or estimated return period, of flood events are fundamental to proper planning for flood management and minimization of the social and economic costs of flood damage. In this study, 1D/2D coupled flood models of the Mert River, which flows into the Black Sea at Samsun in north-central Turkey, were developed. Based on the flood modeling results, flood extent, flood depth and flood hazard maps for the ...Daha fazlası
