Objective: It is stated that participation of fathers in the breastfeeding process has a positive effect in starting and maintaining breastfeeding, as well as coping with the difficulties of breastfeeding. This is why it is important to measure the support to be provided by fathers to their partners during the breastfeeding process with up-to-date and reliable measurement instruments. This study aimed to conduct the validity and reliability testing of the Paternal Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (PBSES) that was developed by Dennis, Brennenstuhl and Abbass-Dick (2018) for Turkish society.
Material and Method: The study was carried out in the period of January 2019 - June 2019 at the pediatrics clinics of two research hospitals of schools of medicine in the center of the province of Konya in central Turkey an included fathers of infants at the ages of 2-6 months who visited the clinics for routine examinations. In this methodologically designed study, the required sample size was assumed to be at least 10 times the number of items in the scale, and the study was completed with 221 fathers.
Findings: The SPSS 21 and AMOS 21 software were used for the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses in the study. As a result of the factor analysis, the cronbach’s alpha value of the 14-item scale with one dimension was found as 0.93. For the scale, the KMO value was 0.939, Bartlett’s Test p-value was p=0.000, and RMSEA=0.077, NFI=0.909, GFI=0.901, and AGFI=0.861. The Turkish version of PBSES consisted of 14 items and one factor.
Conclusion: This study adopted the Paternal Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale Short Form (PBSES–SF) into Turkish and tested it for validity and reliability. As a result of the analyses, it was determined that the PBSES-SF was a valid and reliable measurement instrument for Turkish culture
