Particle identification in ALICE: a Bayesian approach

KARASU UYSAL, Ayben | ALICE Collaboration

We present a Bayesian approach to particle identification (PID) within the ALICE experiment. The aim is to more effectively combine the particle identification capabilities of its various detectors. After a brief explanation of the adopted methodology and formalism, the performance of the Bayesian PID ap- proach for charged pions, kaons and protons in the central barrel of ALICE is studied. PID is performed via measurements of specific energy loss (dE/dx) and time of flight. PID efficiencies and misidentifica- tion probabilities are extracted and compared with Monte Carlo simulations using hig ...Daha fazlası

Azimuthally-differential pion femtoscopy relative to the third harmonic event plane in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

KARASU UYSAL, Ayben | ALICE Collaboration

Azimuthally-differential femtoscopic measurements, being sensitive to spatio-temporal characteristics of the source as well as to the collective velocity fields at freeze out, provide very important information on the nature and dynamics of the system evolution. While the HBT radii oscillations relative to the second harmonic event plane measured recently reflect mostly the spatial geometry of the source, model studies have shown that the HBT radii oscillations relative to the third harmonic event plane are predominantly defined by the velocity fields. In this Letter, we present the first resu ...Daha fazlası

φ-Meson production at forward rapidity in p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV and in pp collisions at √s = 2.76 TeV

KARASU UYSAL, Ayben | ALICE Collaboration

The first study of φ-meson production in p–Pb collisions at forward and backward rapidity, at a nucleon– nucleon centre-of-mass energy √sNN = 5.02 TeV, has been performed with the ALICE apparatus at the LHC. The φ-mesons have been identified in the dimuon decay channel in the transverse momentum (pT) range 1 < pT < 7 GeV/c, both in the p-going (2.03 < y < 3.53) and the Pb-going (−4.46 < y < −2.96) directions — where y stands for the rapidity in the nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass — the integrated luminosity amounting to 5.01 ± 0.19 nb−1 and 5.81 ± 0.20 nb−1, respectively, for the two data sam- ...Daha fazlası

Azimuthally differential pion femtoscopy in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

KARASU UYSAL, Ayben | ALICE Collaboration

We present the first azimuthally differential measurements of the pion source size relative to the second harmonic event plane in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair of sNN 1⁄4 2.76 TeV. The measurements have been performed in the centrality range 0%–50% and for pion pair transverse momenta 0.2 < kT < 0.7 GeV=c. We find that the Rside and Rout radii, which characterize the pion source size in the directions perpendicular and parallel to the pion transverse momentum, oscillate out of phase, similar to what was observed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The ...Daha fazlası

Measurement of the inclusive isolated photon production cross section in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

KARASU UYSAL, Ayben | ALICE Collaboration

The production cross section of inclusive iso- lated photons has been measured by the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC in pp collisions at a centre-of-momentum energy of √s = 7 TeV. The measurement is performed with the electromagnetic calorimeter EMCal and the central track- ing detectors, covering a range of |η| < 0.27 in pseudora- pidity and a transverse momentum range of 10 < pTγ < 60 GeV/c. The result extends the pT coverage of previously published results of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the same collision energy to smaller pT. The measurement is compared to next-to-leading order pert ...Daha fazlası

Centrality dependence of particle production in p–Pb collisions at √sNN= 5.02 TeV

KARASU UYSAL, Ayben | ALICE Collaboration

We report measurements of the primary charged-particle pseudorapidity density and transverse momentum distributions in p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV and investigate their correlation with experimental observables sensitive to the centrality of the collision. Centrality classes are defined by using different event-activity estimators, i.e., charged-particle multiplicities measured in three different pseudorapidity regions as well as the energy measured at beam rapidity (zero degree). The procedures to determine the centrality, quantified by the number of participants (Npart) or the number of n ...Daha fazlası

Multiplicity dependence of (anti-)deuteron production in pp collisions at s=7TeV

KARASU UYSAL, Ayben | ALICE Collaboration

In this letter, the production of deuterons and anti-deuterons in pp collisions at s=7 TeV is studied as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity density at mid-rapidity with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Production yields are measured at mid-rapidity in five multiplicity classes and as a function of the deuteron transverse momentum (pT). The measurements are discussed in the context of hadron coalescence models. The coalescence parameter B2, extracted from the measured spectra of (anti-)deuterons and primary (anti-)protons, exhibits no significant pT-dependence for pT

Production of light nuclei and anti-nuclei in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

KARASU UYSAL, Ayben | ALICE Collaboration

The production of (anti-)deuteron and (anti-)3He nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV has been studied using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The spectra exhibit a significant hardening with increasing centrality. Combined blast-wave fits of several particles support the interpretation that this behavior is caused by an increase of radial flow. The integrated particle yields are discussed in the context of coalescence and thermal-statistical model expectations. The particle ratios, 3 He /d and 3 He /p, in Pb-Pb collisions are found to be in agreement with a common chemical freeze-out te ...Daha fazlası

Centrality dependence of the pseudorapidity density distribution for charged particles in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV

KARASU UYSAL, Ayben | ALICE Collaboration

We present the charged-particle pseudorapidity density in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV in centrality classes measured by ALICE. The measurement covers a wide pseudorapidity range from −3.5 to 5, which is sufficient for reliable estimates of the total number of charged particles produced in the collisions. For the most central (0–5%) collisions we find 21400±1300, while for the most peripheral (80–90%) we find 230 ± 38. This corresponds to an increase of (27 ± 4)% over the results at √sNN = 2.76 TeV previously reported by ALICE. The energy dependence of the total number of charged partic ...Daha fazlası

Production of 4He and 4He in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV at the LHC

KARASU UYSAL, Ayben | ALICE Collaboration

Results on the production of 4He and 4He nuclei in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range | y |< 1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0–10% central events are found to be dN /dy4 He = (0.8 ± 0.4 (stat) ± 0.3 (syst)) × 10−6 and dN /dy4 He = (1.1 ± 0.4 (stat) ± 0.2 (syst)) × 10−6, respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (Tchem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of 4He/4He is 1.4 ± 0.8 (stat) ± 0.5 (syst).
