Observation of Hot Tearing in Sr-B Modified A356 Alloy

In this work, T-shaped mould design was used to generate hot spot and the effect of Sr and B on the hot tearing susceptibility of A356 was investigated. The die temperature was kept at 250°C and the pouring was carried out at 740°C. The amonut of Sr and B additions were 30 and 10 ppm, respectively. One of the most important defects that may exist in cast aluminium is the presence of bifilms. Bifilms can form by the surface turbulence of liquid metal. Hot tearing tendency of A380 with various element additions (Sr, Sr+Ti, Ti, B and B+Sr) was investigated. Constrained rod casting (CRC) hot tearing test method was used to characterize the hot tearing sensitivity. Reduced pressure test (RPT) samples were produced from each condition and all trials were repeated three times. Effect of Sr and Ti Addition on the Corrosion Behavior of Al-7Si-0.3Mg Alloy

In the present study, the corrosion behaviour of A356 (Al-7Si-0.3Mg) alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution has been evaluated using cyclic/potentiodynamic polarization tests. The alloy was provided in the unmodified form and it was then modified with AlTi5B1 for grain refinement and with AlSr15 for Si modifications. Characterization of the Effect of Melt Treatments on Melt Quality in Al-7wt %Si-Mg Alloys

The effects of degassing, holding time and melt additions (Sr, Sr + Ti, Ti, B and B + Sr) on the quality of A356 melts were examined. A total of 120 reduced pressure test samples were collected. Pores in these samples were analyzed via digital image processing to determine the number density of pores as well as the statistical distribution of their sizes. Results showed that in all cases, degassing with argon reduced the number of defects regardless of the additions made to the melts. Moreover, all additions were found to degrade melt quality. Grain Refinement, Modification, Degassing and Melt Quality Relationship in Al-7Si-0.3Mg

In this work, Al-7Si-0.3Mg alloy was studied. The alloy conditions was selected to be as-received, AlB3 grain refined and Sr modified. For each parameter, castings were made before and after degassing. In order to quantify the melt quality, reduced pressure test was used and bifilm index measurements were made. All the cast parts were subjected to metallographical examination, and thus, porosity measurements, distribution, area fraction were compared for each of the casting conditions.
